Root Canal Treatment

What is a Root Canal Treatment?

Root canal treatment (RCT) is a treatment to save an infected tooth instead of removing it. The procedure involves removing the infected pulpal tissue and cleaning and disinfecting the pulpal space, then filling and sealing it. The common causes affecting the pulp are a cracked tooth, a deep cavity, recurrent decay, severe tooth wear with nerve exposure or trauma to the tooth.

When do I need a Root Canal Treatment?

If you keep your teeth clean and visit a dentist regularly, you will likely never need one! However, when you are experiencing a toothache due to the infected pulp, you will have to decide whether to get rid of the problematic tooth, or a RCT to get rid of the toothache and keep the tooth. Additionally, if your tooth also suffers from chronic abscesses (a small collection of pus under the skin surface), but does not cause you pain, you will also need an RCT to resolve the abscess.

How does the Root Canal Treatment happen?

Our dentists perform the treatment in four separate stages to allow time for your tooth to settle.

Stage 1Pain control
Stage 2Cleaning and disinfecting the pulpal space
Stage 3Filling and sealing of the pulpal space
Stage 4Final restoration

A crown is always recommended following Stage 4 to provide reinforcement to your tooth to prevent any further infection.

The four stages may take place over several appointments depending on the ability to control the pain and the complexity of the anatomy of the pulpal space.
